I have taught music in North Carolina's public schools since 1990, and I find it to be even more rewarding now than when I began teaching! I believe that all children can show growth in musical skills and knowledge, and I use a wide variety of classroom activities and strategies to help students achieve in music. These include singing; using "body percussion" (clapping, snapping, etc.); playing instruments, from small percussion instruments such as drums to large xylophones and other mallet instruments; using sign language; performing with lummi sticks; and (in 5th grade) playing the recorder. Students also learn to read musical notation...beginning in Kindergarten with rhythmic notation and note values; and learning to read pitch (treble clef) starting in 3rd grade.
My own schooling took place here in Yancey County (at Clearmont Elementary, Cane River Middle, and Mountain Heritage High Schools) and in Chapel Hill at the University of North Carolina, where I majored in music and received a Bachelor's of Music Education in 1990. | |
